Please join us in thanking Paige Shurina for recently joining our first-year Cosmetology students to give a presentation to answer their questions about what it is like to be in the industry.
Paige's demonstration covered how to give a shampoo, blow-dry, and a style.
"I explained to the class that it’s not the simple service that it seems to be," Paige said. "It’s about examining your client's scalp and hair, like the texture and condition it is in. That will help them determine the products they will use at the shampoo bowl and what styling products will be used to get the client's desired end result. I also showed them techniques and how to manipulate the hair for different hair types."
Paige, a 2019 Fox Chapel Area graduate, attended the Cosmetology program, is now self-employed, and works out of Sola Salons, which is a building with individual suites that Cosmetologists rent out. Paige is responsible for products and all needs for her clients.
"I had worked in a salon for two years and loved the atmosphere and after the pandemic, I had a really hard time adapting to the new rules in the salon," Paige said. "... I spoke with some friends that worked in Sola Salons and wanted to try it out. I love the one-on-one with my clients. It makes both parties more comfortable."
Most of Paige's clients are blondes because she began her career as a blonde specialist who did highlight and balayage techniques.
One of the most important lessons she learned at Beattie was professionalism.
"My teachers always made sure we were dressed for the part no matter what because you never know who you’re going to run into that day and how important first impressions are in this industry," Paige said.
She also gave advice to the class.
"I attended every extra class or after-school activity I could to get extra hours and it really paid off," Paige said. "Listen to your teachers. They have worked/work in the industry and know what they are talking about. Students that are able to attend Beattie and get the education they need for their desired career are very fortunate to have that opportunity. I have been told countless times how lucky I am to have gotten my education for my field at such a young age. I hope all the students now take advantage of all the opportunities and resources Beattie provides for them."
Paige's Sola Salon suite is located at 2045 Mackenzie Way, Cranberry, PA 16066. Her business account on Instagram is @paigeshurinahair and her website is paigeshurina.glossgenius.com.
