Remote Instruction

How will A.W. Beattie’s instructors teach remotely?

Instructors have been equipped with resources like new GoPros and webcams to do livestreams with students and to do recorded lessons. While remote learning in our programs is not ideal, we have prepared to offer students the best learning experience possible under any circumstance.

The Career Center purchased 200 laptops to be used for students who do not already have an electronic device to stay up-to-date in their program.

Yes. Students will be given instructions in their programs to maintain daily attendance.

In-School Learning Health and Safety

Will students and staff be required to wear face masks?

Yes. If a student arrives without a facemask or needs to have a facemask replaced, one will be provided to them. In some cases, face masks and face shields were already regularly worn in some of our programs prior to the COVID-19 outbreak. Hand sanitizer will also be available to students and staff.

Will students and staff be screened for symptoms?

The career center requests that staff and students complete a self-health checklist each day. Click here to view the Self-Health Checklist.

Students or staff members who exhibit symptoms of COVID-19 will be quarantined in a specified room and parents will be notified immediately.

What if a staff member or student has a COVID-19 test?

Staff members and students who have a COVID-19 test should quarantine at home for test results. Those who have positive tests should notify the career center and continue to quarantine. For more information, click here for the COVID-19 Decision Tree.

Students may drive to the Career Center and reserve a parking spot for a $20 fee starting on the first day of the school year, which is August 31, 2020. Students may also be driven to and from school by parents.

Each sending school district provides bus transportation to and from the career center. For more information on bus transportation, contact your school district.

Class sizes have always varied by program. For the upcoming school year, class sizes will be about 5 – 15 students for any given instructor due to the hybrid learning strategy.

What if COVID-19 cases spike in our school district communities?

In this scenario, all students may have to shift to a fully remote learning experience. The school district has and will continue to coordinate COVID-19 responses with its school districts and the Allegheny County Health Department and the PA Department of Health, along with the PA Department of Education.

The A.W. Beattie Training Salon will open as an outside salon by appointment only under the Hybrid Learning plan. Unfortunately, the restaurant will not open to the public, but our Culinary Arts and Pastry Arts students will still prepare meals, which may be purchased by staff.
