Haley hasn't graduated yet, but she already has a full-time job in her field

Haley, a Deer Lakes senior, found her passion and a full-time job a year before graduating from high school.

Haley is in A.W. Beattie’s Dental Careers program where she is a second-year student. Her younger brother Paul is in Carpentry, and her cousin Jes is in Veterinary Sciences.

“Dental Careers was one of the programs I visited during our tours, and I thought it would be a lot of fun and Mrs. Gibson seemed like a great teacher,” Haley said. “Now I look forward to being here. It’s always the best part of my day.”

Haley began working full-time at GKG Orthodontics in the summer as a sterilization lab assistant, appliance lab technician and clinical floater. She is working part-time during the school year and hopes to learn more about chair side care before graduation.

“Haley has been a great student, so she came to mind when GKG Orthodontics asked me if there was a student who was ready to start working in the field,” Dental Careers instructor Mrs. Gibson said. “She’s a go go-getter in everything she does whether it’s here or at Deer Lakes.”

Haley is also in the National Honors Society, a basketball player and a student council representative at Deer Lakes. She plans to be a Dental Assistant after graduating from high school and may simultaneously attend college to become a Dental Hygienist.

“I love working with people, so this turned out to be a perfect fit for me,” Haley said. “You always think you have to go to college, so I never thought about not going to college until I got here. If I don’t go, I already have a good career ahead of me. If I do, I’ll be a few steps ahead of everyone else in my classes.”
