MANDARIN CHINESE I
NOTE: Mandarin Chinese is a year long, full credit course. Students can participate in the course via Distance Learning via the Live Video Network at their high school and do not need to travel to A.W. Beattie Career Center.
MANDARIN CHINESE I: This course offers students an introduction to Mandarin Chinese. In addition to building a meaningful vocabulary, students will learn the basic concepts of sentence structure, pronunciation and writing. The course curriculum will follow the model used by the Confucius Institutes across North America. This model has been in place for several years and has been very successful. According to the Confucius Institute curriculum; to learn a foreign language successfully, one must have the following conditions:
Confucius Institute Mandarin Chinese courses are designed to create such conditions through a combination of modern mutlimedia technology and expert teachers. The course represents the most current thinking and research on language education and online learning. It takes advantage of what the computers can do best: provide personalized learning, rich media content and learning tools for language basics, ample culture content, and vast amounts of practice. But unlike most computer-based learning or online language programs, we also provide live instruction by an expert instructor to take care of what computers cannot do: high-level communication practices, relevant feedback, social interaction and instructions about learning languages.
PREREQUISITES: This course will be offered at A.W. Beattie Career Center and is open to students in grades 6 through 12. Students must have a 3.0 GPA.
MANDARIN CHINESE II, III & IV
NOTE: Mandarin Chinese is a year long, full credit course. Students can participate in the course via Distance Learning via the Live Video Network at their high school and do not need to travel to A.W. Beattie Career Center.
MANDARIN CHINESE II, III & IV: Students who have successfully completed Mandarin Chinese I or can display adequate competency in Spoken and Written Mandarin Chinese can enroll in the following courses. Students will be exposed to an increased vocabulary, complex sentence structure, and intermediate level Chinese characters. Focus will continue to be placed on real world applications of language, both spoken and written.
PREREQUISITES: This course will be offered at A.W. Beattie Career Center and is open to students in grades 6 through 12 who have either successfully completed Mandarin Chinese I or can display adequate competency in both Spoken and Written Mandarin Chinese. Students must have a 3.0 GPA.
